Suppose you go on an 8-hour car trip.
For the first 6 hours, you travel at an average rate of r miles per hour on the highway.
For the last 2 hours, you travel at an average rate of 30 mph slower in the city.
Find the distance traveled.
:
r = rate for the 1st 6 hrs
(r-30) = rate for the last 2 hrs
d = total distance traveled
:
Dist = time * rate
d = 6r + 2(r-30)
d = 6r + 2r - 60
d = 8r - 60 mi is the distance traveled
