A cyclist traveling at a constant rate of 12 miles per hour is passed by a car traveling at a constant rate of 60 miles per hour in the same direction along the same road. If the driver of the car stops 10 minutes after passing the cyclist, and the cyclist continues to travel at the same constant rate, how many minutes after the car stops will the cyclist reach the car?
***
speed of car relative to cyclist=60-12=48 mph
travel time*speed=distance
10 min=1/6 hr
1/6*48=8 miles (distance car is ahead of cyclist when car stops after passing cyclist)
distance/speed=travel time
8/12=2/3 hr or 40 min
How many minutes after the car stops will the cyclist reach the car? 40
