Question 938275: Ok so I have homework and my teacher didn't help me much to understand it. I have tried setting up ratios and all that but here is the question:
The Shanghai Maglev Train is one of the fastest trains in the world, traveling about 2,144 miles in 8 hours. The distance between Columbus, Ohio, and New York City is about 560 miles. How many hours would it take the train to travel between cities?
I am very stuck, at first I think I got it, but then I doubt myself knowing that isn't how I will solve this problem. Please help. Thanks!

Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance = Rate * Time
D = r*t
2144 = r*8 ... plug in the distance of 2144 mi and time of 8 hrs
2144/8 = r
r = 268
The train travels at 268 mph (on avg)
-------------------------------------------------------
D = r*t
560 = 268*t ... plug in the distance of 560 mi and speed of 268 mph
560/268 = t
t = 2.08955 (this is approximate)
It will take roughly 2.08955 hours

Simple uniform rates, travel problem.
RT=D rate time distance.
SOLVE FOR T.
You can try to use simple ratio if you want.
The travel rate is the same for the entire trip.
That means D for distance, T for time, the ration is a constant.
and if two "fractions" are equal then their reciprocals are also equal.
Note that the left and right sides still must be equal.
You can undo the division by 560 on the left by MULTIPLYING both sides of the equation by 560:
Now just simplify the right side and compute as needed.
