Question 937869: Suppose you can ride a bicycle a distance of 5 miles in 15 minutes. If you ride at a constant speed and if the bicycle's wheels have diameter 27 inches, find the wheels' approximate rate of turn (in revolutions per minute)
Answer by TimothyLamb(4379)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
linear speed of bike:
s = linear speed
d = distance
t = time
s = d/t
s = 5/15
s = (1/3) mile/minute
s = (1/3) mile/minute * (5280 ft/mile) * (12 inches/ft)
s = 21120 inches/minute
---
wheel parameters:
c = circumference
r = radius
d = diameter
c = 2*pi*r
c = pi*d
c = 3.1415*27
c = 84.8230016469 inches
note that one revolution = c arc length along the road
---
angular speed of wheel (rate of turn):
rpm = s/c
rpm = (21120 inches/minute) / (84.8230016469 inches)
rpm = 248.989066526
---
answer:
249 rev/minute
