Question 936211: A cyclist can ride 8 miles with the wind in the same amount of time he can ride 5 miles against the wind. The speed of the wind is 4 miles per hour. Which equation can be used to find the speed of the cyclist?
Answer by srinivas.g(540) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let cyclist speed be x miles per hour
speed of the wind ( w) = 4 miles per hour
relative speed in the direction of wind = x+4
relative speed against the direction of wind = x-4
distance traveled in the direction of wind = 8 miles
hence time taken =
=
distance traveled against the wind = 5 miles
time taken =
but time taken in both cases is same
we have to solve above equation
