Two motorists start toward each other at 4:30 p.m. from towns 225 miles apart.
If their respective average speeds are 40 and 45 mi/hr, at what time will they meet?
:
Let t = travel time for them to meet
When they meet, the sum of their distances will = 225
:
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
40t + 45t = 225
85t = 225
t = 225/85
t = 2.647 or 2 + .647(60) = 2 hrs 39 min
they will meet at: 4:30 + 2:39 = 7:09
