Question 93493: Hi I am stuck and need some help. Could someone please help me with setting this problem up and solving. I have tried it so many times and still not getting it. A motorboat leaves a harbor and travels at an average speed of 8mph toward a small island. Two hours later a cabin cruiser leaves the same harbor and travels at an average speed of 16mph toward the same island. In how many hours after the cabin cruiser leaves will it be alongside the motorboat? Thanks for your help.....
Answer by checkley75(3666)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
DISTANCE=RATE*TIME
SEEING AS THE DISTANCES ARE THE SAME ONLY THE SPEED & TIME ARE DIFFERENT THUS
8T=16(T-2)
8T=16T-32
8T-16T=-32
-8T=-32
T=-32/-8
T=4 HOURS FOR THE 8 MPH BOAT & 4-2=2 HOURS FOR THE 16 MPH BOAT
PROOF
8*4=16*2
32=32 MILES THEY BOTH TRAVELED.
