Question 930508: Two buses leave Chicago at the same time traveling in opposite directions. One bus travels at 56 mph and the other at 53 mph. How soon will they be 654 miles apart?
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance = rate x time

One bus
d = rt
d = 56t {distance = rate x time}

Other bus
d = rt
d = 53t {distance = rate x time}

When traveling in opposite directions, their combined distances will equal 654.

56t + 53t = 654 {combined distances and set equal to 654}
109t = 654 {combined like terms}
t = 6 {divided each side by 109}

In 6 hours, they will be 654 miles apart
