Two small planes start from the same point and fly in opposite directions. The first plane is flying 70 mph slower than the second plane. In 3 h, the planes are 870 mi apart. Find the rate of each plane
-----------------
Slow plane DATA::
rate = x-70 ; time = 3 hr ; distance = r*t = 3x - 210 miles
-------
Faster plane DATA:
rate = x mph ; time = 3 hr ; distance = r*t = 3x miles
-------------------
Equation:
distance + distance = 870 miles
3x-210 + 3x = 870
6x = 1080
x = 180 mph (faster plane rate)
x-70 = 110 mph (slower plane rate)
