Question 92134: I have no clue how to solve this- PLEASE HELP ME!
A cyclist traveled at a rate of 24 mph to visit a nearby town. The cyclist averaged 18 mph on the return trip. If the round trip took 4.9 hours, find the distance to the nearby town.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A cyclist traveled at a rate of 24 mph to visit a nearby town. The cyclist averaged 18 mph on the return trip. If the round trip took 4.9 hours, find the distance to the nearby town.
----------
To the town DATA:
distance = x miles ; rate = 24 mph ; time = d/r = x/24 hrs.
===================
From the town DATA;
distance = x miles ; rate = 18 mph ; time d/r = x/18 hrs
---------------------
EQUATION:
time + time = 4.9 hrs
x/24 + x/18 = 4.9
(18x+24x)/(24*18) = 4.9
42x = 24*18*4.9
42x = 2116.8
x = 50.4 miles (distance to the nearby town)
