Question 919403: a grain barge travels on a river from point a to point b loading and unloading grIn. the barge travels at a rate of 3 mph relative to the water. the river flows downstream at a rate of 1 mph. if the trip upstream takes 2 hours longer than the trip downstream, how far is it from point a to point b

a grain barge travels on a river from point a to point b loading and unloading grain.
the barge travels at a rate of 3 mph relative to the water.
the river flows downstream at a rate of 1 mph.
if the trip upstream takes 2 hours longer than the trip downstream, how far is it from point a to point b
:
let d = distance from a to b
From the information given we know effective speeds are
3 + 1 = 4 mph down stream
and
3 - 1 = 2 mph upstream
:
Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
time upstream - time downstream = 2 hr
- = 2
multiply by 4, cancel the denominators and you have
2d - d = 4(2)
d = 8 mi from a to b
