Question 915677: Two cyclists are competing in a 12-mile race on a quarter-mile circular track. They began at the same time. One biker's average speed is 24 miles per hour. The other's average speed is 30 miles per hour. How many complete laps will the slower cyclist have left to complete after the faster cyclist finishes?
Ok so I know that it s a 12 Mile Race on a 1/4 mile track = 1/4 x 4 = 1 mile = 48 times around the track to make 12 miles.
I also know it took the 30 mile per hour cyclists .4 hours or 40 minutes to complete 12 miles. (i think)
This is where i get stuck.
Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks.

Faster cyclist time to complete 12 miles = t=d/r 12/30 = 2/5 hours

In 2/5 hours slower rides 2/5 * 24 = 48/5 miles
Balance = 12- 48/5 = 12/5 miles
1/4 mile = 1 lap
12/5 miles = 12/5 *4 = 48/5
= about 9.6 laps

The fast cyclist:

OR
hours
OR
, meaning time for the fast cyclist was 24 minutes.

The slow cyclist traveled a distance miles in that time.

Unfinished laps for the slow cyclist:

(just work through the basic arithmetic.)
