(r+w)*3=900
(r+w)=900/3
r+w=300
against the wind
(r-w)*5=900
(r-w)=900/5
r-w=180
r+w=300
add
r+r=300+180
2r=480
r=240 mph rate of plane in still air
240-w=180
w=240-180
w=60 mph wind
check
(240+60)*3=900
300*3=900
900=900
ok
(r-w)*5=900
(240-60)*5=900
180*5=900
900=900
ok
