I am traveling a lake 10 miles wide at 12 miles per hour, then my motor fails. I row at a rate of 3 miles per hour. If I row for half the time the total trip takes, how long does the trip take?
***
let x=distance traveled at 12 mph in motorboat
10-x=distance traveled at 12 mph in rowboat
travel time=distance/rate(same for both boats)
3x=12(10-x)
3x=120-12x
15x=120
x=8
x/12=8/12=2/3
how long does the trip take? 2/3 hr
