two cars start from two towns 500 miles apart and travel towards each other. they pass each other after 5 hours. find the speed of each car if the difference between their speeds is 40 miles per hour
let x=speed of faster car
x-40=speed of slower car
distance=travel time *speed
5x+5(x-40)=500
5x+5x-200=500
10x=700
x=70
x-40=30
speed of faster car=70 mph
speed of slower car=30 mph
