Question 909679: Flying with the wind, a plane flew 1500 mi in 5 h. Against the wind, the plane required 6 h to fly the same distance. Find the rate of the plane in calm air and the rate of the wind.

r*t=d
with the wind
(r+w)*5=1500
(r+w)=1500/5
r+w=300
against the wind
(r-w)*6=1500
(r-w)=1500/6
r-w=250
r+w=300
add
r+r=300+250
2r=550
r=275 mph rate
275-w=250
w=275-250
w=25 mph wind
check
(275+25)*5=1500
300*5=1500
1500=1500
ok
(r-w)*6=1500
(275-25)*6=1500
250*6=1500
1500=1500
ok
