Answer by JulietG(1812) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X + (x+20) =
2X + 20 = 106
2X = 86
X = 43
The slower train is traveling 43 mph
The faster train is traveling 63 mph
They travel apart 106 miles each hour
106 * 3.5 = 371
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3.5*x+3.5*(x+20)=371
3.5*x+3.5*x+3.5*20=371
7.0*x+70.0=371
7.0*x=371-70.0
7.0*x=301.0
x=301.0/7.0
x=43.0
x+20=63
or
3.5*(x+x+20)=371
3.5*(2x+20)=371
3.5*2x+3.5*20)=371
7.0x+3.5*20=371
7.0x+70.0=371
7.0*x=371-70.0
7.0*x=301.0
x=301.0/7.0
x=43.0
check
x+20=63

You can think of this as one train
standing still and the other moving
at the sum of their speeds.
--------------------------
Let = the speed of the slower train
= the speed of the faster train
--------------------------
-----------------
The slower train's speed is 43 mi/hr
The faster train's speed is 63 mi/hr
-----------------
check:
Slower train:
Faster train:
-----------------
OK
