Question 905648: Over the weekend, Juan bicycled 49 miles. On Sunday he rode 10 miles more than one-half of his distance on Saturday. Find the number of miles he rode each day.
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let N be Sunday, and S represent Saturday.
S + N = 49
N = .5S + 10
Take the value of N from the second equation and put it into the first.
S + N = 49
S + (.5S+10) = 49
1.5S + 10 = 49
Subtract 10 from each side
1.5S = 39
Divide each side by 1.5
S = 26
If he rode 26 miles on Saturday, then he rode 49-26, or 23 on Sunday.
Prove it: On Sunday he rode 10 miles more than one-half of his distance on Saturday.
One-half of Saturday's distance is 26/2, or 13.
Ten more than 13 is 23.
