Question 903800: Alex and Brian are driving golf carts on the same path in the same direction. Alex's cart is traveling at 4 miles per hour and Brian's cart is traveling at 8 miles per hour. Alex passes a lemonade stand at 11:40 A.M. If Brian passes the same lemonade stand at 11:52 A.M., at what time will Brian catch up to Alex?
Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
gaining speed 8 -4= 4 mph
headstart 4*0.2 =0.8 miles
time to catch up 0.8/4=0.2 hours
time to catch up =12 minutes
alegebraic solution
4(t+0.2)=8t
4t+0.8=8t
0.8=8t-4t
0.8=4t
0.2=t
distance to meeting 0.2*8=1.6 miles
