Question 902234: Running at an average rate of 7 meters per second, a sprinter ran to the end of a track. The sprinter then jogged back to the starting point at an average rate of 3 meters per second. The total time for the sprint and the jog back was 3 minutes 30 seconds. Find the length of the track.

_________________speed_________time________distance
ONE WAY___________7_____________x__________d
OTHER WAY_________3_____________y__________d

Either convert speeds to meters per minute or convert times to seconds. Converting the speeds seems better.

For rate r in meters per second: AMP Parsing Error of [r*(m/sec)*60(sec/min)]: Invalid function ')*60(sec/min)': opening bracket expected at /home/ichudov/project_locations/algebra.com/templates/Algebra/Expression.pm line 70. .

_________________speed(m/min)___________time________distance
ONE WAY___________420____________________x__________d
OTHER WAY_________180____________________y__________d

The tabulated data allows for some equations:

_________________speed(m/min)___________time________distance
ONE WAY___________420____________________x__________d=420x
OTHER WAY_________180____________________y__________d=180y
Total__________________________________

This indicates a system of TWO equations:
.

Finally, knowing x or y, you can evaluate the length of the track, d.
