Question 896856: Problem: a train travelling at 180 mph passes a point in 6 seconds. The train has 10 carriages (including the engine) and each carriage is of equal length with no separation. What is the length of each carriage. My solution: 180 mph converts to 264 feet per second, therefore in 6 seconds = 1584 feet. Divide this bt the 10 carriages = 158.4 feet per carriage. Is this correct?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let's see what i get.
rate * time = distance.
distance is the length of the train.
180 mph / 3600 = .05 miles per second.
.05 miles per second * 5280 is equal to 264 feet per second.
6 * 264 = 1584 feet in 6 seconds.
1584 divided by 10 = 158.4 feet per carriage.
looks good to me.
