Question 896604: a train leaves the station at 1 pm It travels an average rate of 60 mi/hr A high speed train leaves the same station an hour later traveling at an average rate of 96 mi/hr The second train follows the same route as the first train on a parallel track In how many hours will the second train catch up with the first train
Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The first train traveled 60 miles in that hour
The second train needs to make up that 60 miles
It is gaining on the first train at 36 mph.
Tt will take it 60/36=10/6=5/3 =1 2/3 hours or 1 hour and 40 minutes to catch up.
Another way
60(x+1)=96x
60x+60=96x
60=36x
5=3x
5/3=x
