A FREIGHT Train averaging 50 mph and an EXPRESS Train averaging 70 mph depart at the same time from the same city headed for the same destination. If the FREIGHT Train arrives 1 hour and 15 minutes later than the EXPRESS Train how far apart are the two cities ?
:
Let d = distance between cities: Change 1 hr 15 min to hrs: 1 + 15/60 = 1.25 hrs
:
Write a time equation: Time = dist/speed
Freight time - Express time = 1.25 hrs
- = 1.25
:
Get rid to the denominators, multiply equation by 350, you then have:
7d - 5d = 350(1.25)
:
2d = 437.5
:
d = 437.5/2
:
d = 218.75 mi between cities
:
:
Check solution, using a time equation:
Freight time - Express time:
218.5/50 - 218.5/70 =
4.375 - 3.125 = 1.25
