Two cars travel the same distance.
The first car travels at a rate of 36 mph and reaches its destination in t hours.
The second car travels at a rate of 53 mph and reaches its destination in 4.5 hours earlier than the first car.
How long does it take for the first car to reach its destination?
:
(t-4.5) = travel time of the 2nd car
:
Write a dist equation, both cars are traveling the same dist (dist = speed * time)
36t = 53(t-4.5)
36t = 53t - 238.5
238.5 = 53t - 36t
238.5 = 17t
t = 238.5/17
t = 14.03 ~ 14 hrs
:
:
Check this, find the dist each car traveled, should be the samee
14.03 - 4.5 = 9.53 hrs the travel time of the 2nd car
53 * 9.53 = 505.1 mi
1st car dist
36 * 14.03 = 505.1 mi
