Two cars, which are 490 miles apart and whose speeds differ by 6 miles per hour, are moving toward each other. If they meet in 5 hours, find the speed of each car
Let x = speed of slower car
then
x+6 = speed of faster car
.
5x + 5(x+6) = 490
5(x + x+6) = 490
5(2x+6) = 490
2x+6 = 98
2x = 92
x = 46 mph (speed of slower car)
.
speed of faster car:
x+6 = 46+6 = 52 mph
