Question 887203: an executive flew in a jet to a meeting in a city 1200 kilometers away. After traveling the same amount of time on the return flight , the pilot mentioned that they had 300 kilometers to to. The air speed of the plane was 900 kilometers per hour. how fast was the wind blowing assuming that the wind direction was parallel to the flight path and constant all day.

r = ordinary speed of plane
w = wind speed

Which Way_______rate_________time________distance
Going____________r+w__________t___________1200
Return___________r-w__________t___________1200-300

You unfortunately did not precisely tell which air speed is meant by "900 kilometers per hour." Since this was given AFTER you described the slower, return trip, the data table can be adjusted to this:

Which Way_______rate_________time________distance
Going____________r+w__________t___________1200
Return___________900__________t___________1200-300=900

Now, according to RT=D, the value for t looks to be 1 hour.
from "Going" equation.
kilometers per hour

What more? We have this for the data table:
Which Way_______rate_________time________distance
Going____________r+w__________1___________1200
Return___________r-w=900__________1___________900

The equations being and .
Two equation in the two unknowns, r and w.
