Question 886244: A motorboat leaves a harbor and travels 9 miles per hour toward an island. Two hours later, pontoon boat leaves the same harbor and travels 18 miles per hour toward the same island. In how many hours will the pontoon boat pass the motorboat?
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
After hour 1:
M = 9 miles
P = 0
After hour 2:
M = 18 miles
P = 0
After hour 3:
M = 27 miles
P = 18 miles
After hour 4:
M = 36 miles
P = 36 miles
.
The pontoon boat will *catch up to* the motorboat after four hours. So, it will actually *pass* the boat a 4 hours 1 second ;-).
