a plane takes off from an air field at 10.00 am and flies at 120km/hr on a bearing of 325 degrees.
a second plane rakes off from the same airfield at a bearing of 100 degrees at 90 km/hr,
at 10.25 am how far apart are the two planes?
:
find the angle between the two flight paths
(360-325) + 100 = 135 degrees
:
Find the distance traveled by both aircraft after 25 min
25/60 * 120 = 50 mi by plane 1
25/60 * 909 = 37.5 mi by plane 2
:
We have a triangle with side/angle/side, use the law of cosines
a = 50
b = dist between the two planes
c = 37.5
Angle B = 135 degrees
:
b^2 = 50^2 + 37.5^2 - 2(50*37.5)*cos(135)
b^2 = 2500 + 1406.25 - 2(1875)*-.707
do the math
b =
b = 81 mi between them
