Using the distance formula Distance = Rate x Time, we will solve this problem. Thus, 675 = 60x + 75x. I set up this problem this way because the two trains are the same distance apart. To find the time we have to set up the formula adding the two rates and the times. I did that because they are traveling in opposite directions so they are both contributing to how far apart they go.
When you solve the equation for x, 675 = 60x + 75x
675= 135x
Divide by 135.
5 = x
Therefore, the amount of time that it took for the two trains to be 675 miles apart is 5 hours.
