Question 884880: Two women live on the same street, but live 1.5 miles apart. Each morning both women begin running at the same times in the same direction. Because of where she lives, Jane is always 1.5 miles ahead of Due when they start running. Jane runs at a rate of 6 mph and Sue runs at a rate of 8 mph. After how many hours, does Sue catch up to Jane. If they run for an hour and 15 minutes, how far ahead will Sue be? Round to the nearest whole number for both answers.

Two women live on the same street, but live 1.5 miles apart.
:
Let t = time in hrs for S to catch J
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
8t = 6t + 1.5
8t - 6t = 1.5
2t = 1.5
t = 1.5/2
t = .75 hrs for S to catch J
:
If they run for an hour and 15 minutes, how far ahead will Sue be?
Find the distance each travels in 1.25 hrs, remembering S starts 1.5 mi from J
(1.25*8) - 1.5 = 8.5 mi
1.25 * 6 = 7.5 mi
-------------------
difference: 1 mi, S is ahead of J
