The Skagit River's current is 6mph. A boat travels 50 miles downstream in the same time that it takes to travel 30 miles upstream. What is the speed of the boat in still water?
***
let x=speed of boat in still water
(x+6)=speed of boat downstream
(x-6)=speed of boat upstream
distance/speed=travel time(same for both directions
50/(x+6)=30/(x-6)
50x-300=30x+180
20x=480
x=24
speed of boat in still water=24 mph
