Question 874262: A plane leaves an airport traveling at an average speed of 240 kilometers per hyour. How long will it take a second plane traveling the same route at an averege speed of 600kilometrs per hour to catch up with the first plane if it leaves 3 hours later. PLEASE SET UP AN EQUATION AND SOLVE. Thank you very much for your help!
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
When the second plane catches up the distance traveled by both is the same
first plane speed = 240 km/h
time = x
distance = 240(x)
Second plane speed = 600 km/h
time = (x-3)
distance = 600(x-3)
240x=600(x-3)
240x=600x-1800
360x=1800
x=5 hours
second plane starts 3 hours later
5-3=2 hours
