Question 871844: A motorboat travels 40 miles downstream (traveling with the current) in 2 and 1/2 hours. The river's current is known to be 2mph.
A.) What was the speed of the motor boat in still water?
B.) If the boat maintains the same still-water speed, how long will it take the boat to return, given that it will be traveling upstream (traveling against the current) ?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
40 miles in 2 hours so
speed with current = 40/2.5 = 16 mph
speed of current = 2 mph
so speed of boat in still water = 16-2 = 14 mph
when travelling upstream the speed will be 14-2 = 12 mph
t= 40/12 = 3.33 hours
