Question 864035: Christina’s motorboat took 3 hours to make a trip downstream with a 6-mph current. The return trip against the same current took 5 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Boat speed speed x mph
current speed 6 mph
..
against current x- 6
with current x+ 6
..
against current 5 hours
with current 3 hours
Distance is same. D=r*t
5 ( x - 6 ) = 3 ( x + 6 )
5 x - 30 = 3 x + 18
5 x - 3 x = 30 + 18
2 x = 48
/ 2
x = 24 mph
Boat speed speed = 24 mph
