Question 859327: Susan wants to find out how long it will take her to bike to a store that is 1 mile away, and then turn around and walk home. Susan's average cycling rate is 6 times her walking rate. Write and simplify an expression for how long it will take Susan to bike to the store, and then turn around and walk home. If her walking rate is 2 miles per hour, how long will it take Susan to bike to the store and walk home?
I've tried this question and found the expression would be 6x+x which would simplify to 7x, but I am unsure of how to apply her walking rate to the problem, but if the route was 1 mile long, then it would be 0.5 hours to walk home from the store, but I don't know about how long it would take if she was biking. Thanks!
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let walking rate be x mph
cycling rate = 6x
distance = 1 mile each way
t=d/r
time to store = 1/6x
time return = 1/x
Total time = 1/6x + 1/x
= (1+6)/6x
=7/6x
if walking rate is 2 mph
=7/(2*6)
= = (7/12)*60
= 35 minutes
