Question 856840: It takes a train 8 hours to travel from Capital City to Johnson city when it travels at a speed of 65 mi/h. How long would it take the train to go the same distance when it travels 40 mi/h?
I tried to make it a ration 8/65=x/40 and i cross multiplied, but i did not get any of the multiple choice answers.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed * time = distance
let time taken initially be t1 & speed s1
and time taken later be t2. and speed s2
s1*t1=s2*t2 ( distance same)
65*8 = 40 * t2
65*8/40 = t2
t=13 hours

Distance equal for both trips.
R*T=D and since you could make two equations for each speed, they are representing the same distance.

65%2A8=40%2Ax, which is 65%28miles%2Fhour%298%28hours%29=D=40%28miles%2Fhour%29x%2Ahours.
65%2A8%2F40=40%2Ax%2F40
