Betty leaves her purse in a store at the mall and averages 36mi/h on her way home to Glenville, 140 miles away.
Betty distance: 36x miles
------------------------------------
Honest Harry discovers her purse and starts after her one hour later. If he averages 48mi/h, how long will it take him to catch Betty ?
Harry distance: 48(x-1) miles
-------
Equation:
distance = distance
36x = 48x-48
12x = 48
x = 4 hours (time needed for Harry to go the same distance as Betty)
-------
Will he catch her before she reaches Glenville ?
In 4 hours she could have gone 4*36 = 144 miles
------
He will not catch her before she reaches Glenville.
Cheers,
Stan H.
