Question 842484: The speed of a current is 4 mph. If a boat travels 44 miles downstream in the same time that it takes to travel 22 miles upstream, what is the speed of the boat in still water? 15mph, 14mph, 8mph or 12mph? Answer by mananth(16949) (Show Source):
Distance against current 22
Distance with current 44
Time = same equate the time against with time with current
t=d/r
22 /(x- 4 )= 44 /(x+ 4 )
22 *(x+ 4 )= 44 *(x- 4 )
22 x + 88 = 44 x -176
22 x -44 x = -176 + -88
-22 x = -264
/ -22
x= 12 mph
