Question 841714: From a point on a straight road, 2 cars are driven in opposite directions, 1 at 40mph and the other at 74 mph. In how many hours will they be 456 miles apart? ( the answer is 4 hours. I'm not sure how to set up the equation.) Found 2 solutions by richwmiller, hovuquocan1997:Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The formula for this is always speed*time=distance
Let's set the time in this problem as "x"
The distance the first car travels is speed*time = 40x
The distance the second car travels is speed*time = 74x
They tell you how many miles they're apart, and they tell you that "they're driven in opposite directions", that means the total of two distances of two cars are 456
So we have the equation
