Question 838352: At 10:00 am. a car leaves a house at a rate of 60mph. At the same time, another car leaves the same house at a rate of 50mph in the opposite direction. At what clock time will the cars be 330 miles apart?
I tried using a graph my teacher gave us to solve these, but I am so lost. I have absolutely no idea how to do this problem. Help will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
add the two speeds together
(50+60)x=330
110x=330
x=3
add 3 hours to 10 am to get 1 pm
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Their speeds will add since they are going
in opposite directions
You can think of one car ( either car ) as
standing still and the other one moving
away at the sum of their speeds
------------------------------------
The sum of the speeds is:
mi/hr
-------------------------
Let = the time in hours that elapses
until they are miles apart
------------------------------------
Now I can say:
hrs
hrs after 10 AM is 1 PM
-----------------------------
You can check this method by saying
is the distance the faster car goes in hrs
is the distance the slower car goes in hrs
------------------------------
mi
and
mi
and
mi
as it should- OK
