let the distance distance downstream be x
upstream speed = 3-1=2 mph
downstream speed = 3+2 = 5 mph
time downstream + time upstream = 3
x/2 +x/5 =3
multiply by 10
5x+2x=30
7x=30
x= 30/7 = 4.3 miles
time down stream = 4.3/5
=0.86 hours
or 52 minutes

(3+2)*a=(3-2)b
5a=b
6a=3
a=.5 hours downstream with the current
b=2.5 hours upstream against the current
2.5 miles
