Question 822406: A hot air balloon 2,100 ft above the ground can descend at a rate of 1.5 ft/s. The balloon is scheduled to land at 3:30 P.M. When should the balloonist start descending?
Answer by TimothyLamb(4379)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
---
s = d / t
t = d / s
---
descent time:
t = (2100 ft) / (1.5 ft/sec)
t = 1400 seconds
---
time of landing:
3:30 pm = 03 hours and 30 minutes
30 minutes * (60 sec/min) = 1800 seconds
---
start descent at:
1800 - 1400 = 400 seconds past 3 PM
400 seconds * (1/60 min/sec) = 6.666666 minutes
whole minutes in 6.666666: 6 minutes
(with 0.666666 minutes remaining)
(0.666666 min * 60 sec/min) = 40 seconds
---
start descent at:
03:06:40 PM
