Question 821118: Mr. Peck drove to LAX at an average speed of 50 mph, but got stuck in traffic on the return trip and averaged only 30 mph. How far is it to LAX if the round trip took 3.2 hours?
Answer by parshantdeep(1) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We can notice that both distances covered (TO LAX and FROM LAX) are equal though
D(1) = To LAX Distance = Velocity * Time
D(2) = From LAX
And
D(1) = D(2)
D(1) = To LAX = 50x (x = Time taken TO LAX)
D(2) =From LAX= 30(3.2 - x)
So
50x = 30(3.2 - x)
NOW SOLVE :
50x = 96 - 30x
50x + 30x = 96
80x = 96
x = 96/80
x = 1.2
Time taken TO LAX = 1.2
THOUGH
50 * 1.2 = 60
AND
30 * (3.2 - 1.2) = 60
SO
60 = 60
