Question 820622: a woman flies a small airplane from los angeles to san francisco and distance of 210 miles. Because she is flying into a head wind, the trip takes her 2.5 hours. On the way back, the wind is still blowing at the same speed, so the return trip takes her only 1.5 hours. What is her speed in still air and how fast is the wind blowing?
How can i set up the equations for this problem?

Answer by TimothyLamb(4379)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
---
s = d / t
d = s * t
---
up:
D = (x - y) * 2.5
2.5x - 2.5y = 210
---
down:
D = (x + y) * 1.5
1.5x + 1.5y = 210
---
system of equations:
2.5x - 2.5y = 210
1.5x + 1.5y = 210
---
copy and paste the above standard form linear equations in to this solver:

---
x= 112
y= 28
---
answer:
airplaine speed in still air = 112 mph
wind speed = 28 mph
