distance = 12 miles ; rate = x mph ; time = d/r = 12/x hrs

distance = 12 miles ; rate = 4x mph ; time = d/r = 12/4x hrs

Equation:
time + time = 5 hours
12/x + 12/4x = 5
4*12 + 12 = 20x

x = 3 mph (walking rate)
