if a train passes as many telephone poles in two minutes as it goes in km/hr, how far apart are the poles?
:
Let n = km/hr and no. of tel poles in two min
Let d = distance between poles (in meters)
we know 2 min is 1/30 of an hr
:
= n(d)
1000n = 30nd
divide both sides by 30n
= d
d = 33.33 meters between poles
:
see if that works, for example we count 60 poles in two min
That's a distance of 60 * 33.33 ~ 2000 meters traveled in two min
In one hour: 30 * 2000 = 60000 meters which is 60 km/hr
