Question 814817: A red boat and a blue boat are in a race. After 10 minutes, the blue boat is 500 feet ahead of the red boat. If their speeds remain constant, by how many feet is the blue boat leading the red boat after 3 1/2 hours?
I would be so grateful if you could help me with this. My math teacher gives us random word problems without even teaching us the subjects in class, and I can never get them right.

The difference between their rates stays the same, so this means the rate at which they separate is also the same.

feet per hour is that rate.
Ten minutes is of an hour.
same as 3000 feet per hour.

Should be no big deal. Rate*time=distance

in 10 minutes they are 500 ft apart
so in 3 1/2 hours = 180+30 = 210 minutes they will be
210*500/10
10500 feet
