Question 810825: At 12:00 noon Ship A is 125 miles due north of Ship B and is sailing south at a rate of 25 mph.
Ship B is sailing west at a rate of 17 mph. Write the distance (d) between the ships as a function of the time t, where t=0 represents 12:00 noon and determine how far apart the two ships will be at 15:00 hours ?

Help I've been struggling on this problem for some time now please & thank you

Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if t <=5 then
(125-25t)^2+(17*t)^2=d^2
If > 5 then
(25t)^2+(17*t)^2=d^2
at 3 pm (15:00 hours)
(125-25*3)^2+(17*3)^2=d^2
d = sqrt(5101)
d = 71.421
