yolanda and Yoko run a 100 yard race. when Yolanda finishes, Yoko is 10 yards behind her.
They run the race a second time, but this time Yolanda starts 10 yards behind Yoko- who will win the second race?
How far back would Yolanda have to start for the race to end in a tie?
:
lets say Yol runs the 100yds in 10 sec, her speed is 10 yds/sec
In 10 sec, Yok runs 90 yds, her speed is 9 yds/sec. 100/9 = 11.11 sec for 100 yds
:
The 2nd race:
Yol runs 110 yds which requires 11 seconds (110/10)
Yok required 11.111 sec to run 100 yds, so loses by .111 sec
:
"How far back would Yolanda have to start for the race to end in a tie?"
let d = how far back
= 11.111
d + 100 = 11.111 * 10
d + 100 = 111.11
d = 111.11 - 100
d = 11.11 yds back to finish in the same time as Yok, (11 yds 4 inches)
