Question 793410: A car travelling down a road begins accelerating with a constant acceleration of 1.6 m/s2 in the direction of motion. After travelling 167 m at this acceleration, its speed is 76.0 m/s. Determine the speed of the car when it began accelerating.

The relevant formula to use for constant acceleration when you know the initial or final velocity and the distance traveled is
v2^2 = v1^2 + 2ad
Using this formula, substituting v2 = 76 a=1.6 and d=167, we get:
v1 = sqrt(76^2-2*1.6*167)
This gives v1 = 72.4 m/s
